Quilting Classes

Below is the last list of classes I offered back in 2012. I no longer offer a schedule of classes, but do teach classes if you call and have a group of at least 4 people.   Half day classes cost $25 per person.  Full day classes  (6 hours) are $40 per person. You can use the following information for ideas, but classes can be tailored to your needs

Snow Dying – Full day     If there is still some snow on the ground we will be making some beautiful pieces of fabric using basic dying techniques and a lot of snow.  Be sure to see the photo on the website.  These fabrics are beautiful.  You will need to bring 3-6 plastic shoe size boxes.   You will need one for each yard of fabric you make.  I will supply dyes and other chemicals needed for $1/yard of fabric you create.  Wear old clothes and bring a pair of rubber gloves.  PFD (prepared for dying) cotton fabric will be available for $7/yard.  If you choose to bring your own fabric be sure it has been scoured in hot water with detergent.

Introduction to Screen Printing - Can be half day or whole day.   Using my screen printing frames we will use a variety of techniques  to create designs on fabric with fabric paint.  You will be able to create multiple prints of the same design to create a special quilt, purse or garment with your own fabric design.  I will supply you with 10 12”squares of PFD fabric and paint for $10.  You may also bring washed print fabric to add your design to.

Introduction to Soy Wax Batik – Can be whole day or half.   Soy Wax is easier to use than paraffin and beeswax (the traditional mix to use in batik) because it has a low melting point permitting it to be removed from fabric with hot soapy water.  We will use a variety of tools and techniques to apply the wax to fabric and then dye it.  Materials provided are wax, dyes and other chemicals needed for $5.  You may bring your own fabric which must be washed in hot soapy water first to remove any surface treatment it came with.  It also needs to be treated with soda ash, dried and pressed.  You can get soda ash from me. I will have white PFD fabric as well as some washed, treated print available for purchase.

Color Theory and Fabric Selection -  half day.  A class designed to take the guesswork and frustration out of choosing fabrics for a quilt or what goes with what for any situation.  After several books and classes on color I have picked Joen Wolfram’s explanation as the most logical, straightforward and easy to use.  We will be using her Color Tool to work through many examples of fabric combinations.  Bring quilts and fabrics you have questions about and we will work to explain why some combinations work, while others don’t.

Landscape Quilts –2 or 3 full days.  We will be creating a wall hanging about 18x22” from a picture of your choice.  Bring several pictures that you have taken or pictures from magazines that you think would make a good quilt. I also have some coloring books that I have used for natural designs that you may choose to use.  We will go through the creative process step-by-step from selecting fabric to arranging the design and stitching it together.  Bring your machine, a variety of photos and fabrics to change your photo to a quilt.

Making Fabric from Scraps –half day.  Bring your scraps (I will share) and we will explore three different techniques for creating fabric that can be used as a background in a quilt, put into clothing or a purse, or used in any project as a piece of fabric.  We will make 12 inch samples using fusible interfacing, water soluble stabilizer and tulle using our scraps on a base fabric of muslin or other fabric.  I will have stabilizer, tulle and interfacing if you need them.

Crazy Beading –full day.  Do you have a boring spot on a wall hanging, jacket or purse?  Learn how to sew beads to fabric using a variety of different stitches and textures.    In class you will create a sample piece of many different stitches and patterns including crazy quilt patterns and 3 dimensional variations. You can use the techniques on quilts, clothes, purses – anything!

Let’s Face It –half day.  Does your quilt really need a binding to complete the design.  If not, face it.  You will learn how to apply a facing using techniques from dress making so that your quilts will have a crisp edge and no bulk in the corners.  We will do one sample with square corners and one with irregular edges.  Bring two quilt sandwiches 18” on a side and about a fat quarter of another fabric and your sewing machine.

Free motion quilting - my favorite.  Starting from the beginning to a variety of stitches. All day

Flower Pounding -  all day - transfer plant pigment to fabric and use various methods to enhance the color and make them last.

Jewelry Classes

Beaded Brooch – half day. We will start with an interesting shank button, cameo or cabochon and create a beaded brooch using ultrasuede and beads.  Using needle and beading thread, beads will be applied to create a brooch that can be used as a pin, quilt embellishment or as the focal point of a necklace.  Bring a big old shank button or cabochon.  If you don’t have a button or cabochon you want to use, I have them available for purchase.  I will provide the ultrasuede, needle, thread and beads for $5.

Sheet Metal Jewelry I – full day. Starting with sheet copper and aluminum from the furnace shop we will hammer, patina by two different methods, drill, texture, add beads and create one of a kind necklaces and earrings.   Awesome results.   materials which are minimal will be extra

Sheet Metal Bracelet  - half day – A new project which results in a bracelet made with 8-9 sections made with textured patined copper and connected with large oval jump rings and a clasp which you will make with copper wire.  Easier than it sounds.   Materials approximately $5

Grandma’s Jewelry Remade –half day.  We all have old pieces of jewelry with parts we like, but don’t feel like we want to wear it.  Bring your unwearable pieces.  We will take them apart and remake them with a new look.   materials you need to remake your piece extra - approx $3-10)

If you want to learn something that is not included, let me know and if I feel I know enough  we can
